No representation without taxation? Ja, en NL

July 11, 2008

In yesterdays DutchNews the leader column “Good Europeans” was about a number of things the normally pro-Europe Dutch care to bend the rules on.

A real fundamental annoyance living in the Netherlands is that as non-Dutch citizen I have no voting rights. I’m an EU citizen (from the UK). I pay taxes here. I am a permanent resident, registered here. I have a son who was born here (and is Dutch).

The phrase “No Taxation Without Representation!” is orginally American, and led to the Boston Tea Party, and eventually independence… I think it’s time the Dutch Government got wise. Or it will be the Douwe Egberts in the Amstel from us disgruntled taxpayers.
